What is Pernidopril (Aceon) and what are its uses?

Pernidopril (Aceon) is a member of the class of drugs called ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitors).

Pernidopril (Aceon) is used to lower blood pressure.

Pernidopril (Aceon) can be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

How does Pernidopril (Aceon) treat?

Pernidopril (Aceon) belongs to a group of medicines called ACE inhibitors. ACE inhibitors work by blocking the action of a chemical in the body called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Thus Pernidopril (Aceon) reduces the amount of angiotensin in the blood.

Angiotensin has two actions. Firstly it acts on blood vessels to make them narrow and secondly it acts on the kidney to produce less urine.

As Pernidopril (Aceon) stops the production of angiotensin, these actions are reversed. Therefore the kidneys produce more urine, which results in less fluid in the blood vessels. The blood vessels also widen.

The overall effect of this is a drop in blood pressure and a decrease in the workload of the heart.

Dosage: How should you take Pernidopril (Aceon)?

Pernidopril (Aceon) should be taken orally with or without food.

Adults
The usual starting dose of Pernidopril (Aceon) is 4 milligrams daily, taken as a single dose or divided into two smaller doses. Your doctor may increase the dose of Pernidopril (Aceon) until your blood pressure is under control, up to a maximum of 16 milligrams per day. A dose of Pernidopril (Aceon) of 4 to 8 milligrams a day is usually sufficient.

If you have been taking a diuretic, your doctor may tell you to stop taking it 2 or 3 days before you start taking Pernidopril (Aceon). If you need to continue the diuretic without interruption, the doctor may start you on Pernidopril (Aceon) at a reduced dose of 2 to 4 milligrams daily, and then gradually increase the dose if necessary.

If your blood pressure is not adequately controlled with Pernidopril (Aceon) alone, the doctor may add a diuretic to your regimen.

Pernidopril (Aceon) has not been tested in people with severe kidney disease. If you have mild kidney problems, the usual starting dose of Pernidopril (Aceon) is 2 milligrams or less per day. The dose of Pernidopril (Aceon) may be increased gradually to not more than 8 milligrams per day.

Children
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of Pernidopril (Aceon) in children. Special care may be needed.

Older Adults
Higher doses of Pernidopril (Aceon) (above 8 milligrams a day) are prescribed for older adults only with extra caution.
