Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) is an antidepressant medication. The exact way that bupropion works is unknown.
Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) is used to relieve symptoms of depression such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness or guilt, loss of interest in daily activities, changes in appetite, tiredness, sleeping too much, insomnia, and thoughts of death or suicide.
Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) is also used to help people stop smoking by reducing withdrawal effects
How does Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) treat?
Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) tablets contain the active ingredient bupropion hydrochloride, which is used to treat depression. Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) acts in the brain but is not the same as nicotine replacement therapy.
It is not fully understood how Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) works, but it is known that bupropion affects neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are stored in nerve cells and are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells.
Neurotransmitters are released from nerve cells as a message is transmitted. Once the message has been transmitted, the nerve cells then reabsorb the neurotransmitter.
Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) prevents two of these neurotransmitters, noradrenaline and dopamine, from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells. Noradrenaline and dopamine are responsible for moderating mood and various other processes in the brain.
Dosage: How should you take Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR)?

Swallow the Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) tablets whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew these tablets.
Do not cut the Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) tablets in half unless instructed to do so by your health care prescriber.
If you take more than one dose of Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) daily: To limit difficulty in sleeping, the second dose of the day should not be taken at bedtime; take it earlier in the day but at least 8 hours after your morning dose.

Who should not take Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR)?
Do not take Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) if you are taking any other medication that contains bupropion.
Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) will be harmful to a nursing baby. Do not take Bupropion SR (Generic Wellbutrin SR) without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Patients and their families should watch out for worsening depression or thoughts of suicide. Also watch out for sudden or severe changes in feelings such as feeling anxious, agitated, panicky, irritable, hostile, aggressive, impulsive, severely restless, overly excited and hyperactive, or not being able to sleep.
