What is Enalapril (generic Vasotec) and what are its uses?

Vasotec (Enalapril) is a member of the class of drugs called angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors).

Vasotec is used to lower blood pressure and to prevent and treat heart failure.

How does Enalapril (generic Vasotec) treat?

Vasotec works by preventing a chemical in your blood called angiotensin I from converting into a more potent form that increases salt and water retention in your body. Vasotec is effective when used alone or in combination with other medications, especially thiazide-type diuretics.

Vasotec is also used in the treatment of congestive heart failure, usually in combination with diuretics and digitalis, and is prescribed as a preventive measure in certain conditions that could lead to heart failure.

Dosage: How should you take Enalapril (generic Vasotec)?

Take Vasotec tablets by mouth.

Swallow the Vasotec tablets with a drink of water.

Take your Vasotec doses at regular intervals. Do not take Vasotec more often than directed. Do not stop taking Vasotec except on your prescriber's advice.

Adults
High Blood Pressure
The usual starting dose of Vasotec for people not using diuretics is 5 milligrams, taken once a day. The usual dose of Vasotec is 10 to 40 milligrams per day, taken as a single dose or divided into 2 smaller doses.

If you are taking a diuretic, your physician may ask you to stop for 2 to 3 days before using Vasotec. Otherwise, he or she may give an initial dose of 2.5 milligrams of Vasotec under medical supervision before any further medication is prescribed.

If you have a kidney disorder, your Vasotec dosage will be adjusted according to its severity.

To Prevent Heart Failure
The usual starting dose of Vasotec is 2.5 milligrams twice a day, to be gradually increased to 20 milligrams a day divided into smaller dosesTo Treat Heart Failure
Vasotec can be used in conjunction with digitalis and diuretics in people with heart disease. The usual starting dose of Vasotec is 2.5 milligrams twice a day.

The usual regular dose of Vasotec is 2.5 to 20 milligrams each day, taken in 2 separate doses. The maximum daily dose of Vasotec is 40 milligrams, in 2 separate doses.

Children
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of Vasotec in children. Special care may be needed.

Vasotec can be prescribed for high blood pressure in children 1 month to 16 years old. Dosage is determined by weight. Have you skipped your Vasotec dose?
If you miss a dose of Vasotec take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose of Vasotec, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Vasotec.

If you take too much of Vasotec?
Incase of an overdose with Vasotec seek medical emergency immediately.

Inform your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products.

Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way Vasotec works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Who should not take Vasotec?

Vasotec should not be used during pregnancy as it may be harmful to the unborn baby.

Vasotec is present in breast milk. The effect on the infant is unknown. It is recommended not to use Vasotec when breastfeeding or, alternatively, not to breastfeed when taking Vasotec. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

Some people may experience dizziness caused by low blood pressure in the first few days of taking Vasotec. If affected you should avoid performing potentially hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery.

Blood pressure, kidney function and blood potassium levels should be monitored before initiating and at regular intervals throughout treatment.

Alcohol may enhance the blood pressure lowering effect of Vasotec, which may result in dizziness or fainting.

Stop taking Vasotec and consult your doctor immediately if you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, feet or ankles while taking Vasotec.

What should you watch for while taking Enalapril (generic Vasotec)?

Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Check your blood pressure regularly while you are taking Vasotec. Ask your prescriber or health care professional what your blood pressure should be and when you should contact him or her. Call your prescriber or health care professional if you notice an uneven or fast heart beat. Do not treat yourself for a fever or sore throat; check with your prescriber or health care professional as these may be the result of a Vasotec side effect.

Check with your prescriber or health care professional if you get an attack of severe diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, or if you sweat a lot. The loss of body fluid can make it dangerous to take Vasotec.

You may get dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how Vasotec affects you. To avoid dizzy or fainting spells, do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older person. Alcohol can make you dizzier. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Vasotec.

Avoid salt substitutes or other foods or substances high in potassium salts.

Do not treat yourself for coughs, colds, or pain while you are taking Vasotec without asking your prescriber or health care professional for advice.
