What is Sildenafil Citrate and what are its uses?

Sildenafil citrate is used to treat erection problems in men.

Erectile Dysfunction is a condition when a man can't get an erection to have sex or can't keep an erection long enough to finish having sex. Erectile Dysfunction is also called impotence.

Sildenafil citrate does not cure ED or increase a man's sexual desire. Sildenafil citrate is only for men with ED and is not for women or children. Sildenafil citrate should only be used under a healthcare provider's care.

How does Sildenafil Citrate treat?

Sildenafil citrate is a medicine used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (impotence). Sildenafil citrate is called a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, and works by preventing the action of a chemical in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5.

An erection is produced via a complex chain of events, involving signals from the nervous system and the release of chemical messengers within the tissues of the penis. One of these chemical messengers is called cyclic GMP.

Cyclic GMP causes the blood vessels in the penis to widen by relaxing a thin layer of muscle found in the blood vessel walls. This allows more blood to enter the penis, which ultimately results in the penis becoming rigid and erect.

Cyclic GMP is normally broken down by another chemical in the body called phosphodiesterase type 5. Sildenafil citrate works by preventing the action of phosphodiesterase type 5, thus stopping the breakdown of cyclic GMP. This means that the blood vessels are kept dilated for longer, improving blood flow to the penis and maintaining an erection.

As Sildenafil citrate enhances the actions of the chemical messengers responsible for producing an erection, it will only work once these messengers are present. This means that sexual stimulation is required for it to produce and maintain an erection. The Sildenafil Citrate dose should be taken approximately one hour before intended intercourse.

Dosage: How should you take Sildenafil Citrate?

Each dose of Sildenafil citrate should be taken with a full glass of water.

Doses of Sildenafil citrate range from 25 milligrams to 100 milligrams, depending on the drug's effect. The usual prescribed dose of Sildenafil citrate is 50 milligrams.

Sildenafil citrate is usually taken when needed. Sildenafil citrate can be taken anywhere from 4 hours to one-half hour before sexual activity. Generally, it is taken 1 hour before sexual activity. Sildenafil citrate can help achieve an erection when sexual stimulation occurs.

An erection will not occur just by taking a pill.

Sildenafil citrate after eating a high-fat meal (such as a cheeseburger and French fries) may cause the medication to take a little longer to start working.

Do not take Sildenafil citrate more than once a day.

Have you skipped your Sildenafil Citrate dose?
