Generic Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) is used to control some types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. Generic Trileptal cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it.
Generic Trileptal can also treat facial nerve pain from trigeminal neuralgia (a condition resulting from a disorder of the trigeminal nerve).
Generic Trileptal may be prescribed by itself to treat the problem in adults. It can also be used in combination with other seizure medications in adults and in children as young as four years old.
Generic Trileptal contains the active ingredient oxcarbazepine, which is a medicine used to treat epilepsy.
Generic Trileptal works by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain.
The brain and nerves are made up of many nerve cells that communicate with each other through electrical signals. These signals must be carefully regulated for the brain and nerves to function properly. When abnormally rapid and repetitive electrical signals are released in the brain, the brain becomes over-stimulated and normal function is disturbed. This can result in fits or seizures.
Generic Trileptal prevents epileptic fits by preventing the excessive electrical activity in the brain. Generic Trileptal is thought to achieve this by preventing sodium from entering nerve cells when they begin to fire rapid and repetitive electrical signals. A build up of sodium in the nerve cells is necessary for the electrical signal to build up and be passed on to other nerve cells. As Generic Trileptal prevents this, it helps stabilize the electrical activity in the brain.
Preventing the build-up of the electrical signal also prevents the release of a neurotransmitter called glutamate from the nerve cells in the brain. Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that acts as a natural \'nerve-exciting\' agent. It is thought to play a key role in causing epileptic seizures. Reducing the release of glutamate from the nerve cells in the brain is another way in which Generic Trileptal may help stabilize the electrical activity in the brain and prevent epileptic fits.
Generic Trileptal is related to carbamazepine, and is also used by specialists as a mood stabilizer for treating people with the psychiatric illness, bipolar affective disorder (manic depression). This is an unlicensed use of Generic Trileptal. It is not fully understood how it works as a mood stabilizer, but is thought to be to do with the reduction of glutamate activity in the brain.
Generic Trileptal may be taken with or without food.
Generic Trileptal taken alone
The usual starting dose is 300 milligrams of Generic Trileptal twice daily. Your doctor may gradually increase the dose to 600 milligrams twice daily. In people with kidney disorders, the starting dose is 150 milligrams of Generic Trileptal twice daily.
When changing from another antiepileptic medication to Generic Trileptal
The usual starting dose is 300 milligrams of Generic Trileptal twice daily. Your doctor will gradually increase the dose over a period of 2 to 4 weeks, while reducing the other medication over a period of 3 to 6 weeks. The final dosage of Generic Trileptal is typically 1,200 milligrams twice daily.
Generic Trileptal in combination with another antiepileptic medication
The usual starting dose is 300 milligrams of Generic Trileptal twice daily. Your doctor may increase the dose to 600 milligrams of Generic Trileptal twice daily.
Generic Trileptal combined with another antiepileptic medication
For children 4 to 16 years old, dose is determined by weight. After a 2-week buildup, the dose typically ranges from 450 to 900 milligrams of Generic Trileptal taken twice daily.
If you miss a Generic Trileptal dose
If you miss a dose of Generic Trileptal, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Check with your doctor if you miss two or more doses. Do not take double doses of Generic Trileptal.
Generic Trileptal Overdose
Generic Trileptal overdose can lead to serious consequences. Seek medical emergency immediately.
Generic Trileptal Storage instructions
Keep Generic Trileptal out of reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store Generic Trileptal at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Protect from light or moisture. Throw away any unused amount of Generic Trileptal after the expiration date.

If you are taking these medicines with Generic Trileptal your doctor may need to reduce their doses.
Generic Trileptal may decrease the blood levels of the following medicines:
Oral contraceptives (this may make oral contraceptives ineffective, hence women of childbearing age should use additional non-hormonal methods of contraception to prevent pregnancy)
some calcium channel blockers, eg nifedipine, amlodipine.
Carbamazepine may decrease the blood levels of Generic Trileptal:
Generic Trileptal when taken with lithium there may be an increased risk of side effects.
There may be an increased risk of low blood sodium levels if Generic Trileptal is taken with any of the following medicines, which can also lower blood sodium levels:
People taking these medicines in combination with Generic Trileptal should have regular tests to monitor the amount of sodium in their blood.The manufacturer recommends that Generic Trileptal should not be taken in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOIs, eg phenelzine) due to a theoretical risk of an interaction
Do not stop treatment with Generic Trileptal suddenly without consultation with your doctor or pharmacist as it could cause an increase in the frequency of your seizures.
Generic Trileptal precautions if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
It is very important for women with epilepsy to talk to the doctor responsible for their epilepsy treatment before becoming pregnant. Antiepileptic medicines are associated with an increased risk of developmental disorders and malformations in the baby. However, stopping antiepileptic treatment during pregnancy runs the risk of the mother having seizures, which can harm both the mother and the fetus. This risk may be higher than that from continuing Generic Trileptal. It is important that all the risks and benefits of treatment are weighed up. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
Generic Trileptal passes into breast milk and women taking Generic Trileptal should therefore not breastfeed. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
Special warnings about Generic Trileptal
Generic Trileptal may rarely cause a decrease in the normal amounts of blood cells in the blood. For this reason you should consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: unexplained bruising or bleeding, purple spots, sore throat, mouth ulcers, high temperature (fever), feeling tired or general illness.
You may get drowsy or dizzy when you first start taking Generic Trileptal. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how Generic Trileptal affects you. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid alcoholic drinks.
If you are suffering from impaired kidney function you should have regular tests to monitor the amount of sodium in your blood while taking Generic Trileptal.
If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Generic Trileptal.
Generic Trileptal may decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. It is recommended that women of childbearing age should therefore use an additional non-hormonal form of contraception, eg condoms, to prevent pregnancy.
Generic Trileptal is not recommended for children under six years of age.
Oxcarbazepine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and are then compared to side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
