What is Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) and what are its uses?

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) prevents the production of acid in the stomach.  

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) reduces symptoms and prevents injury to the esophagus, stomach, or intestines in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or Ulcers and in those taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs.

How does Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) treat?

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) contains the active ingredient esomeprazole, which is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor.

Proton pumps are found on cells that line the stomach and are used by these cells to produce stomach acid. Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) works by inhibiting the action of the Proton pumps, and this reduces the production of stomach acid.

Acid is produced in the stomach as a normal part of the digestive process. However, in the condition known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or acid reflux, this acid is allowed to flow back into the food pipe (oesophagus), where it causes pain and a burning sensation known as heartburn. The acid can also irritate and cause inflammation of the lining of the foodpipe (reflux oesophagitis).

Dosage: How should you take Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium)?

Take Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) capsules orally. Follow the directions on the prescription label.

The Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) capsules can be opened and the contents sprinkled on applesauce or yogurt, given with fruit juices, or swallowed immediately with water. Do not crush the contents into the food.

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) works best if taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal. Take your Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) doses at regular intervals. Do not take Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) more often than directed.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
The usual prescribed dose of Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) is one 20-milligram capsule daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist, your doctor may prescribe an additional 4 weeks of therapy.

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) Dosage for Erosive Esophagitis
The usual prescribed dose of Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) is 20 or 40 milligrams once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.

If you haven't fully healed after 8 weeks, your doctor may prescribe an additional 4 to 8 weeks of therapy. To maintain healing, the dose of Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) is 20 milligrams once daily.

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) Dosage for Duodenal Ulcers
As part of a three-drug treatment to rid the body of ulcer-causing H. Pylori bacteria, Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) is prescribed at a dosage of 40 milligrams once daily for 10 days.

If you have severe liver problems, you should take no more than 20 milligrams of Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) per day.

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) should not be used if you suffer from inherited tolerance to fructose in the diet or inherited inability to absorb the sugars glucose and galactose (glucose-galactose malabsorption) or inherited deficiency of sucrase and isomaltase in the gut, leading to intolerance to sugars in the diet.

Esomeprazole (Generic Nexium) should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
