What is Telmisartan (Generic Micardis) and what are its uses?

Micardis (Telmisartan) helps lower blood pressure to normal levels.

Micardis controls high blood pressure, but it is not a cure. High blood pressure can damage your kidneys, and may lead to a stroke or heart failure. Micardis helps prevent these things from happening.

How does Telmisartan (Generic Micardis) treat?

Micardis belongs to the group of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Micardis exerts its mechanism of action by inhibiting the action of Angiotensin II.

Angiotensin II is a hormone. Angiotensin II causes the peripheral blood vessels to narrow and also stimulates the production of another hormone aldosterone. Aldosterone causes salt and water retention in the kidneys, which increases the volume of fluid in the blood.

Micardis blocks the receptors that Angiotensin II acts and thereby prevents its actions. The main result of this is that the peripheral blood vessels are allowed to widen, which means that there is more space and less resistance in these blood vessels. This is the main mechanism by which the pressure in the blood vessels is lowered.

Blocking the actions of Angiotensin II also reduces the action of aldosterone on the kidneys. This results in an increase in the amount of fluid removed from the blood by the kidneys. This decreases the amount of fluid in the blood vessels, which also lessens the resistance and pressure in the blood vessels.

The combined overall effect results in lowering of blood pressure.

Dosage: How should you take Telmisartan (Generic Micardis)?

Take Micardis tablets orally.

Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Micardis can be taken with or without food. Take your doses at regular intervals.

Adults
The usual dose of Micardis is 20 milligrams taken once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose to 40 milligrams if needed.

Children
Your doctor must determine use and dose of Micardis in children.

• potassium salts or potassium supplements
• warfarin
• water pills (especially potassium-sparing diuretics such as triamterene or amiloride)

Who should not take Micardis?
Micardis should not be used if you suffer from severely decreased liver function, blockage of the bile duct (biliary obstruction) or inherited tolerance to fructose in the diet.

Micardis should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Micardis and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
