What is Lamotrigine (generic Lamictal) and what are its uses ?

Lamictal (Lamotrigine) is effective in helping to control partial seizures (convulsions) in adults and children with epilepsy.

Lamictal is also used in adults and children who have generalized (major) seizures (convulsions) due to a special condition named Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Lamictal is usually prescribed with other medications that also help to control the convulsions, although sometimes Lamictal may be used by itself.

How does Lamotrigine (generic Lamictal) Works (Mechanism) ?

Lamictal (Lamotrigine) is an antiepileptic medicine. Lamictal works by stabilising electrical activity in the brain.

The brain and nerves are made up of many nerve cells that communicate with each other through electrical signals. Careful regulation of these signals is required for the brains and nerves to function regularly. When abnormally rapid and repetitive electrical signals are released in the brain, the brain becomes over-stimulated and normal function is disturbed. This results in fits or seizures.

Lamictal prevents sodium from entering the nerve cells when they begin to fire rapid and repetitive electric signals. Lamictal thereby prevents fits by preventing excessive electrical activity in the brain.
