What is Losartan-Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hyzaar) and what are its uses?
Hyzaar is a combination of Losartan and Hydrochlorothiazide used to lower blood pressure.
Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill). Hydrochlorothiazide increases the amount of water and salt you lose in your urine. Hydrochlorothiazide is used to lower blood pressure and to decrease edema (swelling).
Losartan controls high blood pressure (hypertension) by relaxing blood vessels.
Hyzaar is effectively used to reduce hypertension (high blood pressure) and for the reduction of stroke risk in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy.
How does Losartan-Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hyzaar) treat?
Hyzaar tablets are a combination of Hydrochlorothiazide and Losartan potassium.
Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to the group of drugs known as thiazide diuretic. Thiazide diuretics act in the kidney, where they increase the production of urine. Hydrochlorothiazide increases the removal of salts from the blood, it thereby causes more water to be drawn out of the blood and into the urine. Removing water from the blood decreases the volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels, which lowers the pressure within the blood vessels, i.e. lowers blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide also decreases the effort required by the heart to pump the blood around the body.
Losartan is a type of medicine called an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Losartan works by preventing the action of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II normally acts on special receptors in the body, with two main results. Losartan causes the peripheral blood vessels to narrow, and it also stimulates the production of another hormone called aldosterone. Aldosterone causes salt and water to be retained by the kidneys, which increases the volume of fluid in the blood vessels. Losartan blocks the receptors that angiotensin II acts on, and so prevents its actions. The main result of this is that the peripheral blood vessels are allowed to widen, which means that there is more space and less resistance in these blood vessels. This helps lower blood pressure.
The combination of these two medicines is particularly useful in treating high blood pressure.
Hyzaar has also been shown to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have high blood pressure together with an enlargement in the left side of their heart. People with both these conditions may therefore been prescribed Hyzaar to reduce their chances of experiencing a stroke. However, Hyzaar is not effective for this particular use in black patients.
Dosage: How should you take Losartan-Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hyzaar)?
Take Hyzaar tablets orally.
Swallow the Hyzaar tablets with a drink of water. Hyzaar can be taken with or without food.
If your blood pressure does not respond to this dose, after about 3 weeks the doctor may increase the dose of Hyzaar.
Store Hyzaar at a temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect Hyzaar from heat and light. Throw away any unused amount of Hyzaar after the expiry date.
Effect of other drugs consumed with Losartan-Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hyzaar)
If Hyzaar is taken with other medicines that lower blood pressure, the effect on blood pressure may be enhanced. This may cause dizziness and on rare occasions, fainting when moving from sitting or lying to a sitting or standing position. Other medicines that reduce blood pressure include the following:
Hydrochlorothiazide in Hyzaar can decrease the amount of potassium in the blood. If Hyzaar is taken with other medicines, which can lower blood potassium, this effect may be enhanced. Such medicines include the following:
Losartan in Hyzaar may increase blood potassium levels. If Hyzaar is taken with other medicines that can increase blood potassium, this effect may be enhanced. Such medicines include the following:
Your blood potassium level should be monitored if you take any medicines that can affect potassium in combination with Hyzaar.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as indomethacin, may oppose the blood pressure lowering effect of Hyzaar and may increase the risk of side effects on the kidneys.
Hyzaar may increase blood levels of the medicine lithium, and Hyzaar is therefore not recommended for people taking lithium. If it is necessary to take both, your doctor should carefully monitor your blood levels of lithium.
Hydrochlorothiazide in Hyzaar may raise blood glucose levels. People with diabetes should therefore carefully monitor their blood sugar while taking Hyzaar, as the effectiveness of antidiabetic medicines may be reduced. This effect may be enhanced if you are also taking diazoxide. Dose adjustments of your antidiabetic medicine may be required. Discuss this with your doctor.
Hydrochlorothiazide in Hyzaar can increase blood calcium levels. If you are also taking calcium or vitamin D supplements your blood calcium level should be monitored.
Hyzaar should not be taken within four hours of the following medicines, as if they are taken at the same time they may reduce the absorption of Hydrochlorothiazide from the gut:
The following medicines may reduce the effect of Losartan in Hyzaar:
Who should not take Hyzaar?
When pregnancy is detected, Hyzaar should be discontinued as soon as possible.
The use of Hyzaar during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy has been associated with fetal and neonatal injury, including hypotension, neonatal skull hypoplasia, anuria, reversible or irreversible renal failure, and death.
Prematurity, intrauterine growth retardation has also been reported.
It is not known whether Hyzaar is excreted in human milk, however significant levels of both the compounds have been shown to be present in the milk of lactating rats. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue Hyzaar, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
Hyzaar should not be used if you suffer from severely decreased kidney or liver function, failure of the kidneys to produce urine, decreased volume of fluid in the body, severe vomiting or diarrhoea.
Hyzaar should not be used if you are allergic to any sulfonamide-derived drugs.
Hyzaar should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Hyzaar and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Check your blood pressure regularly while you are taking Hyzaar. Ask your prescriber or health care professional what your blood pressure should be and when you should contact him or her. When you check your blood pressure, write down the measurements to show your prescriber or health care professional. You must not get dehydrated. Ask your prescriber or health care professional how much fluid you need to drink a day. If you are taking Hyzaar for a long time, you must visit your health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Make sure you schedule appointments on a regular basis.
Check with your prescriber or health care professional if you get an attack of severe diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, or if you sweat a lot. The loss of too much body fluid can make it dangerous for you to take Hyzaar.
You may get dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you know how Hyzaar affects you. To avoid dizzy or fainting spells, do not stand or sit up quickly. Alcohol may increase the possibility of dizziness. Avoid alcoholic drinks until you have discussed their use with your prescriber or health care professional.
If you are going to have surgery tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Hyzaar.
Hyzaar may affect your blood sugar level. If you have diabetes, check with your prescriber or health care professional before changing the dose of your diabetic medicine.
Avoid salt substitutes unless you are told otherwise by your prescriber or health care professional. Do not take medicines for appetite control, asthma, colds, cough, hay fever, or sinus problems without asking your prescriber or health care professional for advice. Do not treat yourself for a fever or sore throat; check with your prescriber or health care professional first.
