What is Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride (Generic Hydroxyzine) and what are its uses?

Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine.

Hydroxyzine relieves itching and allergic skin reactions; may relieve emotional conditions that result in anxiety and tension; reduces nausea and vomiting; helps make you sleep before surgery or at bedtime, and may help with pain relief after surgery.

How does Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride (Generic Hydroxyzine) treat?

Hydroxyzine is a member of the group of medicines called sedating antihistamines

Hydroxyzine main use is to help in the treatment of anxiety. The exact mechanism in which Hydroxyzine works in this condition is not fully known. Hydroxyzine is thought to decrease the activity of certain areas in the brain and thereby relieve anxiety.

Hydroxyzine acts by blocking the binding of histamine to receptors in the body and so preventing or relieving the typical symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Histamine may be released from and act in a small (localised) area of the body e.g. the nose. Alternatively, histamine can result in a serious or complete body reaction e.g. anaphylactic reaction. Hydroxyzine is only useful for the prevention or relief of localised or less serious allergies such as an itchy rash (rather than very serious allergic reactions). 

Take Hydroxyzine tablets orally.

Take Hydroxyzine with food or milk if it upsets your stomach. Take your doses of Hydroxyzine at regular intervals. Do not take Hydroxyzine more often than directed.

Adults
For anxiety and tension
The usual prescribed dose of Hydroxyzine is 50 to 100 milligrams 4 times per day.

For itching due to allergic conditions
The usual prescribed dose of Hydroxyzine is 25 milligrams taken 3 or 4 times a day.

Before and after general anaesthesia
The usual dose of Hydroxyzine is 50 to 100 milligrams.

Children
The total dose of Hydroxyzine is 50 to 100 milligrams daily, divided into several smaller doses.

Have you skipped your Hydroxyzine dose?
If you miss a dose of Hydroxyzine, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose of Hydroxyzine. Do not take double or extra doses of Hydroxyzine.

If you take too much of Hydroxyzine?
Incase of an overdose with Hydroxyzine seek medical emergency immediately.

Symptoms of Hydroxyzine overdose include

• drowsiness,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• seizures,
• hallucinations, and
• decreased breathing.

Where should you store Hydroxyzine?
Store Hydroxyzine out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store Hydroxyzine at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused amount of Hydroxyzine after the expiry date.

Hydroxyzine tablets are available in the strengths of 10 mg, 25 mg and 50 mg.

Effect of other drugs consumed with Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride (Generic Hydroxyzine)

The following drugs may interact with Hydroxyzine. They may increase or decrease the activity of Hydroxyzine.

• alcohol
• barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions), like phenobarbital
• medicines for colds, hay fever or other allergies
• medicines for mental depression, anxiety, or emotional disturbances
• medicines for pain
• medicines for sleep
• muscle relaxants

Inform your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way Hydroxyzine works.

Who should not take Hydroxyzine?
Hydroxyzine should not be used if you suffer from life long inherited blood diseases, which can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental health problems (porphyrias).

Hydroxyzine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Hydroxyzine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Inform your health care professional if your symptoms do not improve within a few days. If you are taking Hydroxyzine on a regular schedule, visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this drug affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol may increase dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

Your mouth may get dry. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking hard candy, and drinking plenty of water will help.

Hydroxyzine may cause dry eyes and blurred vision. If you wear contact lenses you may feel some discomfort. Lubricating drops may help. See your ophthalmologist if the problem does not go away or is severe.

If you are receiving skin tests for allergies, tell your physician you are using Hydroxyzine.

If you are going to have surgery, including dental surgery, tell your dentist or surgeon you are using Hydroxyzine. 

Possible Side effects of Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride (Generic Hydroxyzine)

Side effects of Hydroxyzine that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

• agitation, nervousness, excitability, not able to sleep (these are more likely in children)
• dilated pupils or blurred vision
• fast or irregular heartbeat or palpitations
• muscle or facial twitches
• pain or difficulty passing urine
• seizures (convulsions)
• slurred speech or confusion
• tremor
• unusual weakness

Side effects of Hydroxyzine that usually do not require medical attention

• constipation
• drowsiness, dizziness or fatigue
• dry mouth
• headache
• mild stomach upset
