What is Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) and what are its uses?

Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) is a diuretic. Diuretics increase the amount of urine passed, which causes the body to lose water and salt.

Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) helps to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is not a cure.

Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) also reduces the swelling and water retention caused by various medical conditions, such as heart, liver, or kidney disease.

How does Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) treat?

Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) is a type of medicine called a thiazide diuretic. Thiazide diuretics act in the kidneys, where they increase the production of urine.

Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) works by causing the kidneys to increase the amount of salts, such as potassium and sodium that are filtered out of the blood and into the urine. When these salts are filtered out of the blood by the kidneys, water is also drawn alongside. As Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) increases the removal of salts from the blood, it also causes more water to be drawn out of the blood and into the urine.

Removing water from the blood decreases the volume of fluid circulating through the blood vessels, which decreases the pressure within the blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide (Generic Hydrochlorothiazide) therefore lowers blood pressure.
