Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) is in a class of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers.

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) causes the blood vessels to relax and expand, so that blood passes through them more easily. This effect relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate.

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

The FDA approved Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) in 1997.

How does Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) treat?

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) belongs to a class of medicines called alpha-blockers. Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) works by blocking alpha-receptors in certain areas of the body.

Alpha-receptors are present on the muscle in the prostate gland. This gland is found only in men and lies at the top of the tube connecting the bladder to the outside (urethra).

The prostate gland often enlarges with advancing age (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and presses on the urethra. This can cause urinary symptoms such as poor flow of urine.

By blocking the alpha-receptors, Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) causes the muscle in the prostate to relax. This allows urine to flow freely past the prostate and relieves the urinary symptoms. 

Dosage: How should you take Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax)?

Always take Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) capsules orally after a meal, about 30 minutes after the same meal every day.

Swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water; do not crush, chew, or open capsules. Do not take Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) more often than directed. 

Have you skipped your Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) dose?
Take the missed dose of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) as soon as you remember. Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) should be stored out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open. Store Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) at room temperature below 20 degrees-25 degrees C (68 degrees-77 degrees F). Throw away any unused amount of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) after the expiration date.

Effect of other drugs consumed with Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax)

Do not take Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) if you are taking the following medications. They may increase or decrease the activity of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax).

• other alpha-blockers such as alfuzosin, doxazosin, phentolamine, phenoxybenzamine, prazosin, terazosin

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) may also interact with the following medications:

• cimetidine
• medicines for high blood pressure
• sildenafil (doses of sildenafil higher than 25 mg should be taken at least 4 hours apart from taking tamsulosin)
• tadalafil
• vardenafil
• warfarin

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including nonprescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) works. Check with your prescriber or health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Who should not take Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax)?
Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) should not be used if you have a history of drops in blood pressure when moving from sitting to standing, which causes dizziness (postural hypotension).

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) should not be used if you suffer from severely decreased liver function.

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

What should you watch for while taking Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax)?

You must see your physician regularly. While taking Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax), you must have regular checkups. Follow your physician's advice about when to have these checkups.

You may feel drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you know how Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly. If you begin to feel dizzy, sit down until you feel better.

Avoid alcoholic drinks; they can make you more drowsy, increase flushing, and cause rapid heartbeats. Take Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax) at bedtime to lessen the effects of drowsiness and dizziness, but be careful if you have to get up during the night. Drowsiness and dizziness are more likely to occur after the first dose, after an increase in dose, or during hot weather or exercise. These effects can decrease once your body adjusts to Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax).

Although extremely rare in men taking Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax), contact you health care provider immediately if you experience prolonged and painful erection of the penis which is unrelated to sexual activity (priapism). If not brought to immediate medical attention, priapism can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction (impotence).

If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Tamsulosin Hydrochloride (Generic Flomax).
