Raloxifene (Generic Evista) tablets contain the active ingredient raloxifene hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called a selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM).

Oestrogen, the main female hormone, has many actions throughout the body. Bone tissue, cholesterol metabolism, breast tissue and uterine tissue are all affected by this hormone. At the menopause, blood levels of oestrogen start to decrease and this affects the tissues that are normally responsive to oestrogen.

Raloxifene (Generic Evista) is used to both prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Raloxifene (Generic Evista) works by acting on oestrogen receptors in the bone tissue, where it mimics the natural effects of oestrogen. This gradually reverses the excessive breakdown of bone that happens at menopause and causes an increase in bone mineral density, making bones stronger. Raloxifene (Generic Evista) has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of spinal fractures, but not hip fractures. 

Dosage: How should you take Raloxifene (Generic Evista)?

Raloxifene (Generic Evista) tablets are taken orally. They can be taken with or without food.

Adults

Children

These can affect the way Raloxifene (Generic Evista) works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines. 

Who should not take Raloxifene (Generic Evista)?

Raloxifene (Generic Evista) should not be used if you suffer from severely decreased kidney or liver function, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, failure of the normal flow of bile from the liver to the intestines (cholestasis) or by people with a blood clot in the veins or a history of this, e.g. blood clot in the leg (deep vein thrombosis), in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), or in the eye (retinal vein thrombosis).

Raloxifene (Generic Evista) is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that Raloxifene (Generic Evista) is known to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not take Raloxifene (Generic Evista) if you are pregnant or if you could become pregnant during treatment.

It is not known whether Raloxifene (Generic Evista) passes into breast milk. Do not take Raloxifene (Generic Evista) without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Raloxifene (Generic Evista) should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

Raloxifene (Generic Evista) can rarely cause blood clots. You should avoid long periods of bed rest while taking Raloxifene (Generic Evista). If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Raloxifene (Generic Evista). Raloxifene (Generic Evista) should be stopped at least 3 days before surgery. After surgery, it should be restarted only after you are walking again. It should not be restarted while you still need long periods of bed rest.

You should not smoke while taking Raloxifene (Generic Evista). Smoking may also increase your risk of blood clots. Smoking can also decrease the effects of Raloxifene (Generic Evista) on bone.
