What is Doxazosin Mesylate (generic doxazosin) and what are its uses?
Doxazosin is an antihypertensive.
Doxazosin lowers, but does not cure, high blood pressure. Doxazosin works by relaxing your blood vessels.
Doxazosin also can be used to treat enlargement of the prostate gland in men.
How does Doxazosin Mesylate (generic doxazosin) treat?
Doxazosin contains the active ingredient doxazosin mesylate, which is a type of medicine called an alpha-blocker. Doxazosin works by blocking alpha-receptors in certain areas of the body.
Doxazosin blocks the alpha-receptors on the muscle in the wall of blood vessels. This causes the muscle in the blood vessel to relax and the blood vessel to widen. This lets the blood pass more easily through the blood vessels and hence reduces the pressure in the blood vessels. Doxazosin can therefore be used to treat high blood pressure.
Alpha-receptors are also found on the muscle in the prostate gland. By blocking the alpha-receptors, Doxazosin causes the muscle in the prostate gland to relax. This allows urine to flow freely past the prostate and relieves the urinary symptoms of this condition.
Dosage: How should you take Doxazosin Mesylate (generic doxazosin)?
Take Doxazosin tablets orally.
Swallow the tablets with a drink of water.
Take your doses at regular intervals even if you feel better. Do not take Doxazosin more often than directed. Do not stop taking Doxazosin except on your prescriber's advice.
Your physician may alter the dose of Doxazosin to minimize the potential for dizziness or fainting associated with Doxazosin.
After the effects of the starting dose are measured, your doctor may increase the daily dose to 2 milligrams and then, if necessary, to 4 milligrams, 8 milligrams, or, in people with high blood pressure only, up to 16 milligrams. As the dose of Doxazosin increases, the potential for side effects such as dizziness, vertigo, light-headedness, and fainting also increases.
Low blood pressure is the most likely symptom of overdose with Doxazosin.
Store Doxazosin at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused amount of Doxazosin after the expiration date
Effect of other drugs consumed with Doxazosin Mesylate (generic doxazosin)
Do not take Doxazosin if you are taking the following medications. They may interact with Doxazosin and increase or decrease its activity.
Inform your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including nonprescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way Doxazosin works. Check with your prescriber or health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
Who should not take Doxazosin?
Take Doxazosin regularly for it to be effective.
The safety of Doxazosin in pregnancy has not been established. Doxazosin should therefore be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the benefits to the mother outweigh any risks to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
Doxazosin is present in breast milk. The effect on the infant is unknown. It is recommended not to use Doxazosin when breastfeeding or, alternatively, not to breastfeed when taking Doxazosin. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
Doxazosin can occasionally cause your blood pressure to drop when you move from a lying down or sitting position to sitting or standing, especially when you first start taking Doxazosin. This may make you feel dizzy or unsteady. To avoid this try getting up slowly. If you do feel dizzy, sit or lie down until the symptoms pass.
Doxazosin should not be used if you are allergic to Doxazosin. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Doxazosin and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Get your blood pressure checked regularly.
You may feel drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires mental alertness until you know how Doxazosin affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly.
Avoid alcoholic drinks; they can make you drowsier, and increase flushing and rapid heartbeats. Take Doxazosin at bedtime to lessen the effects of drowsiness and dizziness, but be careful if you have to get up during the night. Drowsiness and dizziness are more likely to occur after the first dose, after an increase in dose, or during hot weather or exercise. Dizziness can decrease once your body adjusts to Doxazosin.
Although extremely rare in men taking Doxazosin, contact you health care provider immediately if you experience prolonged and painful erection of the penis which is unrelated to sexual activity (priapism). If not brought to immediate medical attention, priapism can lead to permanent erectile dysfunction (impotence).
Do not take nonprescription medicine for weight-loss without asking your prescriber or health care professional. Also, do not take cough and cold, hay fever or sinus medications without asking your prescriber or health care professional.
If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Doxazosin.
