What is Desloratadine (generic Clarinex) and what are its uses?

Clarinex (Desloratadine) is an antihistamine.

Clarinex relieves the symptoms of hay fever (sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes), and may help treat hives and associated itching of the skin.

How does Desloratadine (generic Clarinex) treat?

Clarinex tablets contain the active ingredient desloratadine, which is a non-sedating antihistamine. Clarinex works by preventing the actions of histamine.

Histamine is a substance produced by the body as part of its defense mechanisms. Clarinexis stored in cells called mast cells, in almost all tissues of the body. When the body reacts to a foreign substance (known as an allergen, e.g. flower pollen, dust mites), the mast cells stimulated by the allergen release their stores of histamine.

The released histamine then binds to its receptors (H-1 receptors), causing a chain reaction that results in allergic symptoms. Clarinex causes an increase in blood flow to the area of the allergy, and the release of other chemicals that add to the allergic response.

All this results in the symptoms of an allergic reaction. In hayfever and other nasal allergies (allergic rhinitis), histamine causes inflammation of the nose, eyes, skin or airways and results in itchy watery eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing and nasal congestion.

Clarinex works by blocking histamine receptors. It does not prevent the actual release of histamine from mast cells, but prevents it binding to its receptors. This in turn prevents the release of other allergy chemicals and increased blood supply to the area, and provides relief from the typical symptoms of nasal allergies such as hayfever.

Clarinex can also be used to relieve the symptoms of a condition called chronic idiopathic urticaria. This is a chronic itchy rash, similar to nettle rash, but with no apparent cause. Blocking the actions of histamine relieves the itching and reduces the rash associated with this condition.

Clarinex is called a non-sedating antihistamine as it does not enter the brain and is therefore unlikely to cause drowsiness. However, very rarely some people may experience drowsiness.  

Dosage: How should you take Desloratadine (generic Clarinex)?

Take Clarinex tablets by mouth.

Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Do not chew the tablets. Clarinex is taken once daily. Clarinex may be taken at any time during the day, with or without food. Do not take Clarinex more often than directed.

Adults and Children 12 and older
For adults and children 12 and older, the usual dose of Clarinex is 5 milligrams (1 tablet) once a day. If you have kidney or liver disease, the recommended dose of Clarinex is 5 milligrams every other day.

Have you skipped your Clarinex dose?
If you miss a dose of Clarinex, take a dose as soon as you can, then go back to your regular dosing schedule the next day. Do not take double or extra doses of Clarinex .

If you take too much of Clarinex?
Incase of an overdose with Clarinex seek medical emergency immediately.

Symptoms of Clarinex overdose are not well known but may include drowsiness.

Where should you store Clarinex?
Store Clarinex out of the reach of children.

Store Clarinex at room temperature between 2-25 degrees C (36-77 degrees F). Avoid excessive heat temperatures greater than 30 degrees C (86 degrees F); do not freeze. Throw away any unused amount of Clarinex after the expiration date.

Effect of other drugs consumed with Desloratadine (generic Clarinex)

The following drugs may interact with Clarinex. They may increase or decrease the activity of Clarinex

• erythromycin
• ketoconazole
• alcohol
• barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
• medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as alprazolam, diazepam or temazepam
• medicines for hay fever and other allergies
• medicines for mental depression
• medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
• medicines for pain

Inform your health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way Clarinex works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Who should not take Clarinex?
Clarinex is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether Clarinex will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Clarinex without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.

Clarinex passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not take desloratadine without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby

Clarinex tablets are not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

Clarinex should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Clarinex and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

What should you watch for while taking Desloratadine (generic Clarinex)?

Inform your health care professional for checks on your progress. Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve within several days.

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how Clarinex affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol may increase dizziness and drowsiness. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

Your mouth may get dry. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking hard candy, and drinking plenty of water will help.

Severe side effects of Clarinex are rare.
