How does Irbesartan (generic Avapro) treat?

Irbesartan (generic Avapro) contains the active ingredient Irbesartan, which is a type of medicine called an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Irbesartan (generic Avapro) works by preventing the action of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II.

Angiotensin II normally acts on special receptors in the body, with two main results. Firstly, it causes the peripheral blood vessels to narrow, and secondly, it stimulates the production of another hormone called aldosterone. Take Irbesartan (generic Avapro) tablets by mouth.

Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Irbesartan (generic Avapro) can be taken with or without food.

Adults
High blood pressure
The recommended starting dose of Irbesartan (generic Avapro) is 150 milligrams once a day.

If your blood pressure stays high, your dose of Irbesartan (generic Avapro) should be gradually increased to 300 milligrams once a day.

If you are being treated with hemodialysis or high doses of diuretics, you'll be started at a lower Irbesartan (generic Avapro) dose of 75 milligrams once a day.

Children
